The Learning Track

Course 1: EN 13445: Overview, Design Stress and Shell Design

This on-demand course gives participants a starting point to designing conform EN 13445-3:

  • An overview of the chapters in EN 13445-3 and how this forms part of EN 13445,

  • Assessing failure modes, brittle fracture, and determining if a fatigue analysis is needed,

  • Load cases and the maximum design stresses,

  • Design rules for determining the design wall thickness and MAWP of a pressure vessel; cylinders, cones and heads,

  • Thin-walled cylinders versus thick-walled cylinders, and Lame's formula.

Course 2: EN 13445: External Pressure, Nozzles and Flanges

This on-demand course takes participants through external pressure, nozzle and flange design conform EN 13445-3:

  • Shell wall thickness design under external pressure loads; cylinders, cones and ends,

  • Critical buckling length and stiffener design,

  • Determine the required reinforcement at a nozzle/shell intersection or an opening using the "pressure area method",

  • Assessment of flat ends, circular and non-circular,

  • Steps in flange and blind flange assessment and bolt tightening limits according to EN1591-1.

Course 3: EN 13445: Design by Analysis, Fatigue and Heat Exchangers

This on-demand course takes participants through design by analysis, fatigue assessment and heat exchanger design conform EN 13445-3:

  • Design by analysis (FEA assessment) methodology,

  • Equivalent stress, stress decomposition, categorization and linearization,

  • Simplified and detailed fatigue assessments, and the fatigue safety factor,

  • Heat exchanger tubesheet calculations,

  • Expansion joints, rectangular vessels, lifting lugs, saddles, and applied forces and moments.

The EN13445 design code is the harmonized design code for unfired pressure vessel design under the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU). Often the rules are applied using automated software packages and the engineer can lose the overview of the calculation being performed.

This learning track explains the fundamental equations and principles in these design rules. For example: What is the area replacement rule? How is the Taylor and Forge method applied? What inner-stiffener distance is required to prevent collapse under vacuum, and why? What is the difference between primary and secondary stresses, and how is this evaluated in the code?

Next to explaining the rules and how to apply them, participants are challenged on why a rule is formulated in a particular way and show important differences with ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 code.

The learning track consists of 9 online modules collated into 3 courses based on video content. You receive 1-year unlimited access to the learning and the discussions forum. This allows you to repeat modules should you need to refresh your knowledge for your work projects.

Results

After this learning track, you...

  • Understand the structure & scope of the code,

  • Understand the failure mechanisms considered in the code,

  • Are able to use the design rules for many components, amongst others cylindrical shells under internal & external pressure, openings and nozzles, flat ends and flange connections, heat exchanger tube sheets, rectangular shells and saddles and skirts,

  • Understand the role of Design by analysis (Finite Element Analysis) for EN13445 design,

  • Can identify the limitations of the design rules,

  • Know the important differences with the ASME BPVC VIII-1.

Who should attend this learning track

  • Those required to design pressure vessels as per the EN13445 and that want a solid overview and understanding of the design methods used in the code.

  • Engineers that already have experience with the EN13445 and that want to improve their understanding of the backgrounds for the different rules and methods applied in the code.

  • Technicians involved in the production of EN13445 unfired pressure vessels that want a solid understanding of the design basis of their vessels.
