The Learning Track

Course 1: FRP Materials, Manufacturing and Properties

In this on-demand course participants will learn in detail about:

  • FRP Materials and Material specifications,

  • Manufacturing methods of FRP,

  • Applications of FRP, and the key differences between FRP and steel,

  • The bi-axial strength properties of FRP,

  • How the long-term properties differ from the short-term FRP properties,

  • How long-term regression tests are used to define the material strength.

Course 2: Design and Analysis of FRP Piping Systems

In this on-demand course participants will learn in detail about:

  • The concept of Performance Based System Design, and which design codes are available for FRP piping systems,

  • Regression tests, failure tests, fabrication, installation, and operation conform ISO 14692,

  • Constructing a stress envelope for FRP and the difference between the long and short-term envelopes,

  • The steps in performing a pipe stress analysis for FRP piping and the industry-standard methods to reduce high material stress,

  • Stress Intensification Factors (SIFs) used in fittings,

  • Soil-pipe interaction for buried piping and the associated failure modes for FRP piping,

  • Ring deflection and buckling calculations for buried FRP piping.

Course 3: FRP Failures and Product Qualification

In this on-demand course participants will learn in detail about:

  • The failure criteria for GRP piping and how these relate to material properties,

  • The setup of a material qualification program for FRP piping,

  • Understand associated concepts like UEWS, regression testing, and the 1000 hr survival test,

  • How to avoid typical failures with FRP including multiple cases from the field,

  • The causes of longitudinal and circumferential cracks,

  • Understand joint strength and how joints can fail.

Course 4: Piping Flexibility Study for an FRP Piping System

In this on-demand course, participants will be taken through the analysis of an FRP system and will see first-hand:

  • How to obtain the required FRP properties from the pipe vendor specifications,

  • The configuration of the non-isotropic material properties,

  • How to enter the pipe stress envelope, including the long-term axial and hoop strength,

  • The load case set-up conform ISO 14692,

  • How to model pipe fittings, and calculation of the maximum pipe span,

  • Interpretation of piping flexibility results, including GRP flange assessment.

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) piping, also called Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) piping, is a cost-effective alternative to corrosion-prone metallic piping and non-reinforced thermoplastics. However, the design of FRP systems requires specific knowledge as there are fundamental differences compared to the design of steel piping.

This learning track teaches you all the fundamentals required to design and work with FRP piping systems. After this learning track you will have a solid understanding of the material properties and behavior of piping systems and you will understand how this impacts designs. The engineering process is demonstrated, including pipe stress analysis. Also, a multitude of real-life field examples are discussed that illustrate critical aspects of FRP systems. In this learning track a great deal of attention is given to practical aspects of engineering FRP systems.

The learning track consists of 8 online modules collated into 4 courses based on video content. You receive 1-year unlimited access to the learning and the discussions forum. This allows you to redo modules when you need to refresh your knowledge for your work projects.
