Workshop: Background to the ASME B31J Design Code

  • Professional
  • 6 November 2025 (2hr)
  • 2 Hour Session
  • Interactive Q&A
  • Trusted by professionals
  • Certification included

Why take this course?

When doing a piping flexibility analysis conform ASME B31.3 it is compulsory to obtain the SIFs and flexibilities from B31J rather than using ASME B31.3 Appendix D. Join us in this instructor-led workshop to learn about the background to these values from B31J, how they were determined and to discover their impact on some typical piping systems.

What you'll learn

After this Workshop you,
-know about the experimental methods used to determine the ASME B31J flexibility factors and SIFS
-learnt how ASME B31J fits into the historical perspective of SIF and flexibilities for a piping analysis.
-have seen a worked example with the relevance of ASME B31J SIFs and flexibilities on compressor and pump nozzle loads
-have seen a worked example of the relevance of ASME B31J SIFs and flexibilities on heat exchanger nozzle loads
aware of how B31J values should be applied within an EN 13480 code calculation

About the course

Do you want to become more familiar with the SIFs and flexibilities as calculated in ASME B31J which is compulsory for use with ASME B31.3? Piping analysis software typically calculates these values, which differ between plane of the bending moment, and the branch and the header, automatically so it is often not feasible for an engineer to have the time to understand this procedure.

So join us in this instructor-led workshop to learn about the background to the SIFs and flexibilities from ASME B31J and how they are calculated. You will then through worked examples be shown their impact on some typical piping systems.

Your instructor will encourage an open discussion, answering your questions throughout the session, and taking you through a worked example to ensure you leave with knowledge that you can apply going forward.
