Workshop: Sizing and Application of Reciprocating Pumps

  • Professional
  • 18 November 2025 (2hr)
  • 2 Hour Session
  • Interactive Q&A
  • Trusted by professionals
  • Certification included

Why take this course?

Let this instructor-led Workshop take you through the steps in sizing and integrating a reciprocating pump into your piping system. The session will explain all the key parameters, such as Net Positive Suction Head and Acceleration Head together with how to size a pulsation dampener and the pump nozzles. Our experienced instructor will take you through the material, answering questions and concluding with an example.

What you'll learn

After this live Workshop you,
• know to calculate the Net Positive Suction Head Required and how to arrange the suction side piping to achieve this
• have seen how to size a pulsation dampener on the discharge side of the pump and understand its effect on pulsations
• are familiar with typical stroke lengths and piston speeds for different categories of reciprocating pumps
• understand a typical performance curve for a reciprocating pump
• are familiar with acceleration head and know how to calculate it

About the course

This instructor-led masterclass with our rotating machinery expert Dimitri Antoniadis, starts by showing the key components in a reciprocating pump and the typical system diagram around a pump. Participants will learn to be able to calculate all the key parameters such as the Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) and the Brake Horse Power (BHP), and understand the relation between Stroke Length, Speed and Plunger Diameter with the Displacement Capacity.

Reciprocating pumps lead to a pulsating flow and within this session the sizing equation and charts for a pulsation dampener will be explained. Typical piping layouts for the suction side of the pump are shown. This session closes by looking at the lubrating and sealing system before a show a case of how to size the reciprocating pump.

Your instructor will encourage an open discussion, answering your questions throughout the session, and taking you through a worked example to ensure you leave with knowledge that you can apply going forward.
