To compete with more conventionally produced gas, wet sour gas is transported from the wellhead to the gas sweetening units in carbon steel pipelines. Sour gas corrosion can lead to pipeline pinhole leaks, which pose a hazardous risk to people and wildlife, and result in pollution in the environment.

Corrosion in sour gas lines is usually controlled through chemical inhibition in combination with frequent batching and pigging programs. In the presence of elemental Sulphur, the corrosion rate can exceed 30 mm/year. The mitigation methods designed to manage and maintain the integrity of carbon steel downhole tubing and pipelines present some of the toughest technical challenges in corrosion management.

This course outlines sour gas degradation mechanisms and the challenges related to proactive measures to mitigate corrosion, corrosion monitoring, the use of lined carbon steel materials, and some case histories. Additionally, the course covers the challenges related to establishing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which are the key factors in preventing main events such as pinhole leaks.

The course consists of 14 hours of content, provided through online live sessions with the instructor. All training content is provided through your EngineeringTrainer account.

After the course you maintain 1-year unlimited access to the course, including any new course material. This allows you to perform modules again should you need to refresh your knowledge.

Results

After this course, you...

  • have seen the types of water production, how sulfur is formed, and understand their impacts on pipeline corrosion.

  • understand from the sour gas degradation mechanism and how this leads to pinhole leaks.

  • understand the flow regimes in a sour gas pipeline and their impacts on corrosion.

  • know the approach to select the appropriate inhibitors.

  • have seen how to manage the challenges associated with Coated Pipelines in Sour Gas service.

  • have developed the skills to play a proactive role in managing corrosion in sour gas pipelines.

Who should attend this course

Materials and corrosion engineers, operators, inspection engineers and other analytical staff looking to learn how to manage corrosion in sour gas production lines.

Prerequisites:

A basic understanding of corrosion is beneficial.

Level: Intermediate

Live sessions

This course consists of instructor-led group sessions, these group sessions can be Virtual or Onsite. During these sessions participants can ask questions to the instructor which are discussed, as well as questions submitted beforehand in the learning portal.

After each live session used slides and exercise documents are made available to participants on the learning portal. Please note that for privacy reasons no recordings of the live sessions are made or provided. You receive 1-year unlimited access to the online course material. This allows you to watch content again if this is beneficial for your daily work activities and benefit from any material updates.

The live sessions are scheduled together with the customer and are private for their team only.

Typically the training course would be scheduled as:

  • Virtual: 7 sessions of 2 hours each

  • Onsite: 2 days of 7 hours

After the course participants receive 1-year unlimited access to the slides and exercise documents used within the sessions via the learning portal. This allows them to review material when required to refresh their knowledge for daily work activities.

A personal digital certificate will be made available to each participant upon full attendance.
