About the course

Offshore wind turbines operate in a harsh environment where maintenance and inspection are costly and time consuming. The corrosion and fatigue of the structure consequently represent a major challenge for both the design, and Operation and Maintenance.

In this training course participants will be taken through the techniques used in the design and maintenance of offshore wind turbines, such as fatigue design, fracture mechanics-based inspection, and defect assessment. Additionally, the impact of residual stress effects on predicting the component life will be explained. In doing this, the participants will receive a comprehensive overview of structural integrity as applied to offshore wind turbine foundations.

• know how level I, II and III Fatigue Assessment Diagrams can be used to predict the life of cracked components and structures
• know the concept of Fracture mechanics based inspection, are familiar with the Paris law and how this is used to estimate crack length
• have see how corrosion-fatigue testing is performed and analysed for monopile weldments
• understand how residual stresses can be measured using both destructive and non-destructive techniques
• have seen how residual stresses in offshore monopiles are related to the welding sequence.
